Every post goes into wet, poured concrete. We don't tip dry-mix into the hole and wait for the ground to wet it, because in our clay that leaves a weak, patchy footing. Poured concrete sets as one solid plug around the post.
Brackets, hinges and fixings are all galvanised, so rust doesn't get a start. Within a few kilometres of the water that's the difference between a fence that stays tidy and one with orange streaks running down it after a couple of winters.
We never nail rails or plinths in. Every one is fixed to the posts with large-gauge galvanised (Class 3) bugle batten screws, driven up tight — nails work loose and the fence sags within a few years. The only nails we use hold the palings to the rails. It keeps your fence tight and straight for years, not just months.
Across Geelong and the Bellarine, galvanised steel posts are the preferred way to build a fence that lasts — they won't rot, twist or shift the way timber posts can under our coastal wind and weather. In the City of Greater Geelong a building permit is needed for a side or rear fence over 2 metres, a front fence over 1.5 metres within 3 metres of the street, a corner fence over 1 metre within 9 metres of an intersecting street, and a brick or masonry fence over 1.2 metres. A planning permit is a separate approval and can apply on its own, for example under a Heritage Overlay. Dry mix tipped into the hole relies on ground moisture to set, and it often sets patchy, with voids around the post. Poured concrete fills the hole and cures as one solid footing that resists movement. That matters on the Bellarine, where clay swells and shrinks with the seasons and coastal sand barely grips a post. It costs us a bit more per hole, and we think it's the only way to build a fence that stays straight.
